| Description: |
Undoubtedly, the most decorated town plan of any British city that has ever been produced by any mapmaker. In his anxiety to produce a map of universal appeal, contrasting with his utilitarian City of London Plan, Morgan swamped this map in such a torrent of superfluous decoration that the significance of the survey itself is very nearly submerged in it. There is one ornament of the map, however, which is both attractive and very useful. This is the long prospect of London and Westminster as seen from points along the South bank of the Thames. It is the first engraved panorama of London from the Thames that attempted to show every building on the Thames-side and some of those behind. Also included in the map is an index, a list of subscribers, dedications and views of important buildings, including St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. Introduction by Ralph Hyde, Keeper of Prints and Maps, Guildhall Library. Published in association with Guildhall Library, London. |
